Things that remind me why I, a therapist, do what I do…

Today my client’s mother told me that her child read a bedtime story to her last night. I could not believe it! My client has come a long way since last summer when I first began working with him. This client initially had a lot of trouble staying in the chair and therapy in general was difficult for the client. Some days it felt as if I was not getting through to the client and as if the client was not benefiting from therapy. This client is now counting, reading words, and successfully potty trained! To hear that the client is reading to mom, that right there is amazing! Things like this are what motivate me. I live for the days when I come into work and my clients’ parents inform me that their child independently and unprompted verbally asked for the bathroom, requested an item, or simply just told them “I love you.” To be able to experience first hand the joy and excitement of parents witnessing their child progressing reminds me that I am a part of a team who is making a difference in a child’s life. Change may not be observed every second or everyday when you are working as an ABA therapist, but when you do, it is the best feeling. These are the things that remind me why I do what I do!
