The PADS® Overnight Emergency Shelter is the second largest shelter in the State of Illinois. Each night, an average of 175 men, women and children line up outside the doors of Hesed House seeking a place to sleep, shower, do laundry, eat a meal, find medical and legal assistance and other life–sustaining services.

Groundwork Domestic Violence Program, recognizing the crime of domestic violence as a community problem, and successfully coordinated efforts among professional services to build and enhance broad- based support for its program. Groundwork provides comprehensive programming for survivors and their families that includes a 24- Hour Emergency Hotline and Emergency Shelter, Crisis Intervention & Safety Planning, Individual and Group Counseling, Legal and Medical Advocacy and Prevention Education and Community Outreach.

Daybreak Center operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing emergency housing and supportive services to homeless individuals and families. Some participants in the program need short-term housing as a result of a situational crisis. Others need support services as they work to reestablish permanent housing.

The DAV Homeless Veterans Initiative, supported by DAV’s Charitable Service Trust and Columbia Trust, promotes the development of supportive housing and necessary services to assist homeless veterans become productive, self-sufficient members of society. Our goal is to establish a partnership between the DAV and Federal, state, county and local governments to develop programs to assist homeless veterans in becoming self-sufficient.

Emergency shelters provide safe haven for victims, a place where violence cannot find them. WINGS operates two Safe Houses – one in the northwest suburbs and one on the southwest side of Chicago. Our two Safe Houses have the capacity to house 85 people each night.
